Kalkaska Crowns a New King: MIHL Announces New Ownership of the Kalkaska Kings
(St. Louis, MI) – July 3, 2026 – The Michigan Independence Hockey League (MIHL) announced today that the reigning 2026-27 regular season champion Kalkaska Kings have been acquired by a new ownership group led by Northern Michigan native Ed Thirlby.
Thirlby brings decades of successful business experience in the automotive parts industry and has long been a dedicated supporter of youth hockey throughout Northern Michigan. His commitment to both the community and the sport made him an ideal fit to lead the next chapter of the Kings organization.
"First and foremost, we want to thank General Manager Susanna Detcher and Director of Hockey Operations Cam Fisher for everything they have done to help build the Kalkaska Kings into one of the premier organizations in the MIHL," said MIHL President Scott Brand. "Their leadership, professionalism, and commitment to excellence have been outstanding, and our league owes them a tremendous debt of gratitude."
Brand added, "The addition of Ed Thirlby as owner strengthens not only the Kings organization but our entire league. Ed is an accomplished businessman who is passionate about hockey and deeply committed to Northern Michigan. We are excited to welcome him to our Board of Governors and look forward to working with him for many years to come."
The Kings also announced that Cam Fisher will return for the 2027-28 season as the team's Director of Hockey Operations and Head Coach. Joining him directing the bench will be Tyler Thirlby, who will serve as Assistant Coach while also overseeing the club's business operations as Business Operations Manager.
With experienced leadership both on and off the ice, the Kings are well-positioned to build upon their championship success as they prepare to defend their MIHL regular season title.
With new ownership in Kalkaska and significant operational enhancements across the league, the MIHL continues to position itself as one of the Midwest's premier Semi-Professional hockey leagues while building a strong foundation for long-term growth and stability.
