Cheboygan Wendigo Ceasing Operations

(December 29, 2025) – St. Louis, Michigan — The Michigan Independence Hockey League (MIHL) announced today that its affiliate, the Cheboygan Wendigo, has officially ceased operations effective immediately.

“We appreciate the efforts of the organization, the arena, and the Cheboygan community,” said Scott Brand, MIHL Commissioner. “The issue was not community support, but rather the inability to secure a fully committed roster. This by no means closes the door on Cheboygan. It’s a great market, and with the success of our other northern teams—both on the ice and from a business standpoint—I am confident we will add additional northern locations in the future.”

The MIHL Board of Governors will meet on December 30 to finalize an adjusted league schedule and determine whether former Wendigo players will be included in a dispersal draft or declared free agents.

The MIHL is a seven-team semi-professional hockey league entering its sixth season, operating exclusively within the state of Michigan. With a Saturday and Sunday schedule, the league provides players with the opportunity to compete in high level full-check hockey while continuing their education and/or pursuing career paths.
